Honest Event Reviews : Impressions 2016, College of Engineering, Pune

DAY 1

The maiden cultural festival of COEP, Impressions, could not have had a better opening! With a huge footfall, Day 1 was bustling with highly energetic crowds. The acoustic street in the college hosted Savani, a solo singing competition, a combat of talented singers. The judges of Savani were singers Vishwamitra and Sumedh Yeolekar. Besides this, there was Strokes and Blinks in the Art section and Wrap in Scrap in the Crafts section.

There were two events in the Photography section – Freelenser and Box Office. Box Office is a competitive event of displaying short films which was judged by none other than Umesh Kulkarni, the director of the Marathi film Deool.

DJ Pratham electrified the atmosphere of the fest with his playlist of groovy music.
There were umpteen informal events like Minute to Win It, Food Challenge and Who’s Got Talent which drew huge crowds. The Dramatics section had the event Limelight – an event of solo acting. The participants had to display some of their finest thespian skills in a span of 6 minutes.
A treat for the eyes was SoDuet – a duet dance performance. The unanimously favourite event was Street Forward, an event of street dancing. Knights Crew from BMCC emerged as the winners after 2 rounds of fiery performances.

The judges of Street Forward, the famed street dancing crew 13.13 said, “We are very happy to see Pune’s competition rise to this level. This event is by far one of the best competitions in terms of quality. As for COEP, we been made feel very special by receiving customized tokens like these…”, said an excited 13.13 holding framed pencil sketch tokens in their hands.

The event with the highest footfall was Campus Princess which saw a jam-packed auditorium. The event was judged by Roshmitha Harimurthy, who is Miss India Universe 2016. Vaishnavi Hodalkar was declared the winner after a cut-throat competition among the contestants. Roshmitha said that the event reminded of her college days and made her feel nostalgic. She was highly in praise of the exuberant crowd.

DAY 2

The second day of Impressions started off with a fresh air of ebullience which can be attributed to the crowd. Tee-two-one saw artists rendering amazing paintings to T-shirts which were later sold in an auction. The next level of Strokes in Blinks was held which was based on the theme of ‘Incredible India’. Kavya – a poetry recital competition in Hindi and Marathi drew a lot of participants with gifted poetry skills. Suno Suno, a street play competition, had really talented performers who used the platform effectively to spread social awareness and highlight social evils.

High Current, a battle of bands , was an event about music, metal and maestros who were vying for the top place in the fierce competition. The music leavened the aura of the place leaving the spectators tapping their feet to the ground. This was followed by the finals of Savani. Rangeela was the most awaited event of the day. This event of Bollywood dance was judged by the well-known Alisha Singh of Dance India Dance and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa fame. There was also an X-box gaming zone for all gaming freaks. Also, VJ Ayesha from MTV Campus Diaries also interacted with the participants and students and asked them to share their experiences on these two extravagant days.

The second round of the MELA Quiz was held which had more challenging rounds, one of them being a round on Simpsons Art. MELA is the abbreviation for Music Entertainment Literature Arts. The chief guest of the valedictory ceremony was the noted Marathi actor Jitendra Joshi. Cash prizes worth 2 lakh rupees were given to the winners of all the competitions held on both the days. The participants and winners received goodies from Impressions and the sponsors. The last event to put a perfect end to the two merry days of Impressions was a rocking performance by the band PARVAAZ, which was organized in association with Coke Studio. The event saw the audience swaying away to the lilt.

Awantee Deshpande, the media in-charge for Impressions recounts the efforts put in for Impressions, which had no predecessor event.

“We started working till late nights from June itself. This event has been totally managed by 100 odd members of COEP’s Cultural Team”

Akshay Mane, the Secretary of Impressions, said that

Impressions was a dream come true for everyone, specially his seniors who envisioned this years ago. The motivation behind having COEP’s very own cultural festival was to provide a platform for Puneites to showcase their talent in Pune itself, without having to go outside the city.

Dr. S. L. Patil, Dean of Student Affairs, COEP said,

An event like Impressions unleashes the talent of COEPians and of students from other colleges alike.

Alisha Singh of the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa Fame said,

“This is my first visit to the city and I am very excited about it”.

Professor Nandini Iyer who is the faculty advisor for Impressions said,

“Impressions is a perfect blend of intelligence, arts, music and dance”

Thus, the first cultural festival of COEP, Impressions, left an indelible mark and set high benchmarks for the next edition of the fest!
