Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 1: The Wars to Come | Spoiler-coated Review

It all started on April 17th 2011, when the very first episode of a series called Game of Thrones aired on HBO. Since then 4 seasons have gone by and the craze for this series sky-rocketed exponentially all over the world.  The last episode of 4th season was aired on June 15, 2014 luring almost 8 million+ viewers from all over the world and since then the fans around the world have been waiting desperately for Season 5 to come in clear out the air of suspense.

And finally, Season 5 is here and we have been watching everything right from the start.

The title track of the Game of Thrones S05E01 shows one important CHANGE that has happened over the course of four seasons. Winterfell has no Direwolf on its tower anymore, instead there lies the ‘Flayed Man” of the Boltons.

Also we see Pentos back on the map nearly after three seasons.

For the first time ever on the show, there’s been a flashback moment. Never before has that happened, (Spoiler: Fans were expecting the Tower of Joy sequence and tones of other cool flash backs forever, where we could finally find out the truth about Jon Snow and Rhaegar Targaryen.) This sequence in particular, shows us about the prophecy Cersei had when she was little girl. (Spoiler: Although, they conveniently left out the part where the witch describes her death at the hands of her own brother.)

Of course that would’ve been disastrous for the producers. Why follow the books when we can create shit of our own.

Lord Tywin’s funeral was a dull affair. Not that we were expecting another rape scene, but we see Cersei eyeing the NEW Queen, as foretold in the prophecy, and giving her the patented Lannister-Lioness look. Whats new was, we see the humane side of the Queen Regent (she goes by the new title of “Queen mother” these days.) Mourning, literally, feeling crestfallen for her father. She then asks Jamie outright if he set Tyrion free and he doesn’t deny it. (Spoiler: What hurt the fans most was the part that was left out. Jamie standing vigil over his father’s corpse for 7 days and 7 nights.) Of course the producers couldn’t put it in because as usual they have planned something “better” or so they say.

We see through Tyrion’s POV, literally, his journey from the docks of Pentos to the house of Illyrio Mopatis (Host of Daenerys and Viserys in the first season.) Varys finally accepts and sheds light on his relationship with Illyrio. Tyrion has somehow lost all his charm and sharpness, but has got instead an epic beard which only makes him look worthy of another Emmy. (We still haven’t forgotten about the last one he didn’t win). He is quite literally depressed and f**king careless about what comes next.

In Mereen the revolt begins. Sons of the Harpy began their resistance against Sarah Connor a.k.a. the Dragon Queen a.k.a. Mother of Dragons a.k.a. Khaleesi a.k.a. Daenerys of the House Targaryen a.k.a the b**ch who doesn’t listen to anyone. The unprecedented romance between Missandei (the bikini chick from Fast n Furious 7) and Grey Worm is shown budding.

Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) is shown again at his best. Working hard and freaking confused as ever. (He still knows nothing btw. We do miss Ygritte for her signature line – “You know muffin Jon Snow!”) Meanwhile, Stannis is executing a marvelous plan of offering the wildlings a place on the right side of the wall for their support in his war for the Iron Throne. Jon Snow offers wisdom both to Stannis and Mance Rayder but as usual, nobody listens to him.

Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon) is BACK. Better looking and with a better storyline/plot. Also Kevan Lannister, his father and Cersei’s uncle is back. Watch out for him, after all he was Tywin Lannister’s younger brother. Loras Tyrell has started his own rebellion. He’s going all homophile in Kings Landing. Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) too is working her magic on that little new King (lucky bastard).

After some comic burbs between Tyrion and Varys we finally see the scene from trailer we’ve all seen hundreds of times and it only gets better. While Tyrion is still waddling and wallowing, Varys has already planned his next 200 moves.

Hizdar-zo-Loraq is shown as dull as ever. But the point that he made about opening the fighting pits again, is something to look forward to. Daario Naharis, hot as ever, too stresses on the same and also we get to see what the GoT CGI team has in store for us this season. Viserion and Rhaegal. Gods be good. And I thought Smaug from the Hobbit was awesome.

Jon Snow’s attempt to convince Mance Rayder fail miserably. Honor at its best here. Mance Rayder burns. Or does he…? Do check out the look between Mance Rayder and Tormund Giantsbane. You can SEE the Spoiler, if you’re worthy that is. And finally the episode ends with a little dignity, who better than Jon Snow to deliver it. Winter is coming people and not only for HBO and the producers, but for all of us.

The North remembers. And so do the Fans.
