Sundar Pichai is the New CEO of Google, Larry Page Steps Down to Lead the Parent Company ‘Alphabet’

Sundar Pichai Google CEO

A big and surprising news struck the tech world on August 10, 2015. Search giant Google had a major reorganization at the top. Larry Page stepped down as the CEO of Google to lead ‘Alphabet’ a new parent company to Google while Sergey Brin to be it’s president.

To fill up the void, Indian born Sundar Pichai has been appointed as the new CEO of Google. Sundar joined Google in 2004. Over several past years, we have witnessed a meteoric rise in his career. Being the product kingpin at Google, he looked over Google’s major handouts like search, advertising, Android and YouTube.

Larry and Sergey have immense faith in Sundar and have always looked at him as an heir. Born in Chennai, Pichai completed his Bachelors of Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He holds an M.S. from Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Difference Between Sundar Pichai & Larry Page in a Paragraph

Back in time, when Pichai was promoted as Product head at Google, following are the words said by Maarten Hooft, a partner at the venture capital firm Quest Venture Partners who worked at Google for six years between 2006 and 2012.

What are Sundar Pichai's Plans for Google?

In May 2015, The Verge spoke to Sundar about his plans for Android and other products. The entire interview is worth reading but the following excerpt gives a clear picture where this man is willing to drive Google in the years to come…

I want Google to strive to do that — not just build technology for certain segments. For me, it matters that we drive technology as an equalizing force, as an enabler for everyone around the world. Which is why I do want Google to see, push, and invest more in making sure computing is more accessible, connectivity is more accessible. And going back to our core mission, when we do things like machine learning and assist users, I view that as a huge game changer. Because over time, someone who has [access to] just a smartphone hopefully has…the same [capabilities] as someone who is more privileged. That’s what’s very exciting about what we are doing.

What is in for the Parent Company - Alphabet?

The management shakeup include few other moves: Omid Kordestani, Google’s chief business officer will again be leaving Google to advise Alphabet. Omid just returned to the company in October after a five-year absence. His replacement at Google is still unclear.

Google Chief Legal Officer David Drumond and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will also leave their posts at Google once the merger is finalized to take up those same roles at Alphabet. No replacements were named as of now. Ruth Porat, Google’s new chief financial officer, will become CFO at Alphabet and retain her role at Google.

Let us congratulate Sundar on this great achievement and wish him for a phenomenal success at Google. Can’t wait to see what unfolds…
