BARCODE is the flagship event of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune. Having a flagship event symbolizes the public image of the institution and is linked to the reputation of the institute. On this occasion, we conducted the interview with the Director, of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune. We thank our beloved director sir for sparing his valuable time for this interview. The institute holds the vanguard of being a unique one-of-a-kind initiative, among all other B-Schools.
- Every individual has a perspective on SIMS, like beauty and discipline which makes the institute unique. So, we were curious about what makes the institute so special and one of a kind.
He responded- “Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune is one of the leading B-Schools of India. It was established in 1993 and is part of Symbiosis International University (SIU). What makes it unique is that it is one of a kind institute in the entire country which caters to defense personnel and their dependents. Most of our students are from defense backgrounds, but apart from that 10% of the seats are also reserved for students from Industry Sponsored Academia and this makes the SIMS unique. SIMS is the only thriving and successful example of PPP i.e., Public – Private Partnership between the Ministry of Defence and Symbiosis International University. The success of the institute needs no exaggeration as the results speak of the glory of the institute. Excellent Placements and successful entrepreneurial ventures themselves showcase the success of the institute” This opened up a new perspective and we now know the uniqueness of the institute. - As event BARCODE 2022 is around the corner and it is conducted by our own events cell of SIMS. So, we asked the Director of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune about the significance of BARCODE to SIMS.
Director sir responded – “The highlight of any management curriculum is organization and conduct of a B-School event. Every year BARCODE is conducted for three days and this year it is conducted from the 16th to the 18th of September. The theme for this event is INVICTA which means unconquered or undefeated. In these three days, we will be having a series of competitions that are being organized and conducted by the students which makes this a complete student-driven initiative. The competitions will be in the fields of HR, Marketing, Finance, Operations, Entrepreneurship, etc. The most sought competition among all others and the attraction of the event is BEST Manager. This event is conducted continuously for 36 hours and comprises 8 rounds for which the participants are judged. And at the end of this rigorous process, the victor is decided as the Best Manager. The event itself has witnessed more than 1300 registrations and through the quizzes, only a few of them managed to pass to the next rounds. The event got participation from the management students from top B-Schools like IIM, JBIMS, NMIMS, MDI Gurgaon, Great Lakes, and others making the event more inclusive and interesting. One of the specialties of the event is that the event is being judged by top corporate leaders and managers from across varied fields providing the best stage for the student managers to bring out their potential.” - Also, at the closing part of the interview, the Director sir gave a word of motivation and advice to the student managers. “For the holistic development of the students, there are activities that take place beyond the classroom and are equally important along with the classroom learning. So curricular and extra-curricular activities play a very important role in the overall development of an individual. And it is very necessary for the student to participate in such activities, be it competitions, seminars, workshops, and others. So, students should try and participate in such B-School competitions to get maximum learning from them. As many competitions are being conducted by big institutes, it is impractical to participate in all the events. But, being aware of the competition also gives immense learning. Also organizing the event gives a student exposure to conceptualizing, coordinating, planning, and executing the event providing an equal amount of learning. It brings out a lot of qualities like teamwork, leadership, cooperation, time management, and others. Becoming an audience and drawing the learnings from such events is also a skill which- a student should develop.”
