Fireball XVII Event Starts Off On a High Note in Pune | Highlights & Updates

Fireball XVII is at the threshold of its finale. The tournament till date has witnessed a combination of beautiful display of basketball, immense enthusiasm by the spectators, on-court temperament and the tension of winning during a match. All in all, one can say that the event till now has attributed to complete excitement, breathtaking performances and awed display of amazing matches.
With only the final matches to go, we now take a look at the tournament update so far.

Day 1

The opening day of Fireball XVII kicked-off with an inauguration ceremony which saw the presence of the current Leo Advisor and former district governor of Lions, MJF Rajkumar Rathod, the Sports Director of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Mr. Ashok Jagtap, the Chartered President of Leo Club, Mr. Maneck Kotwal and many other celebrated dignitaries.

Day 1 saw the conduct of 2 college level matches, both from the male category.

Match 1 saw BVP Architecture go head to head with BVP MBBS. A match worthy of being the opening clash of Fireball.
BVP Architecture defeated BVP MBBS by 43 points to 36.

Match 2 saw the battle between SITS, Narhe and immediate neighbours PICT.
SITS defeated PICT by 27 points to 15

Day 2

Weekend saw the arrival of Corporate teams for their matches. The matches were played in 2 sessions of Morning and Evening. A day packed with numerous matches, saw the conduct of both, male and female categories.

Morning Session:

  • Male Category:
  1. The 1st match saw Capgemini take on debutants Iplace. In a thrilling match which went down the wire, saw Capgemini overpower Iplace by 34 points to 28.
  2. In the next match, it was the TATA Group completely dominating the team from Harman. A one-sided which saw TATA thrashing Harman by 53 points to 24.
  3. The next match was Wipro v/s Zensar. After a nail-biting first 2 quarters, it was Wipro, which eventually had the upperhand. Wipro defeated Zensar by 35 points to 20.
  4. In the last match of this session from the male category, it was Infosys outshining the team from HSBC with a mammoth defeat by 39 points to 6.

 

  • Female Category:
  1. The only match from this category in the morning session saw the team from Infosys take on Cognizant. Like the team in the male category, the female team from Infosys also dominated their opposition from Cognizant defeating them by 44 points to 22.

 

Evening Session:

  • Male Category:
  1. The 1st match of the evening session saw Initiative going head to head with TCS Maitree. A one-sided affair which saw Initiative emerge as winners, defeating TCS Maitree by 57 points to 31.
  2. The next match witnessed Accenture laying rampage on the team from BNY Mellon. Accenture defeated BNY Mellon by 32 points to 8.
  3. The next match saw Initiative take the court again, to face different opponents in the form of Amdocs. Continuing their winning streak, Initiative defeated Amdocs by 32 points to 21.
  4. The next match between FeelSofts and TCS Maitree saw no change of luck for the latter as FeelSofts defeated TCS Maitree by 29 points to 18.
  5. The last match of the day in the male category saw a low-scoring uptight battle between Zensar and TATA Group. Zensar defeated TATA Group by 23 points to 10.

 

  • Female Category:

The female category witnessed a clash between Innovita and HSBC. An emphatic display of basketball by Innovita which saw them defeat HSBC by 44 points to 12.

Day 3

After a competitive Day 2, the Corporate teams were ready and geared up for a refreshing start to Day 3.

Morning Session:

  • Male Category:
  1. The 1st match of the day was Accenture taking on Capgemini. An easy fixture for Accenture as they saw their way through defeating Capgemini by 45 points to 23.
  2. The next match saw TCS Maitree defeating their opponents from Amdocs by 31 points to 18.
  3. The next match was Zensar v/s Harman. In a match, which showed signs of going down to the wire saw Zensar getting the better of Harman, defeating them by 25 points to 17.
  4. In a high-scoring match between Innovita and HSBC which threatened to boil over, saw Innovita prevail over HSBC defeating them by 47 points to 38.
  5. In another match, BNY Mellon defeated Capgemini by 36 points to 22.
  6. The last match of the morning session in the male category saw FeelSofts overpowering Amdocs by 19 points to 10.

 

  • Female Category:
  1. In a low-scoring match between TCS Maitree and HSBC, it was TCS which defeated HSBC by 13 points to 3.
  2. In another low-scoring match between Innovita and TCS Vijay, it was Innovita winning the match by 12 points to 4.

 

Evening Session:

  • Male Category:
  1. The 1st match of the evening session took place between BNY Mellon and Iplace. An easy fixture for BNY Mellon eventually saw them defeating Iplace by 30 points to 11.
  2. A very tight match between Infosys and Innovita saw Infosys come out as winners defeating Innovita by 24 points to 22.
  3. One of the most one-sided matches in the tournament so far, saw Wipro take on Harman. Wipro defeated Harman by 65 points to 15.
  4. In another neck to neck clash between Initiative and FeelSofts, saw Initiative defeating FeelSofts by 34 points to 26.
  5. In the last match of the day, it was Accenture which ended the day with a bang. Accenture defeated Iplace by 39 points to 9.

Day 4

Weekends were over and hence, it was time for the college level matches.

  • Match 1:

The 1st match of the day saw the only female category clash between BMCC and BVP MBBS. BMCC defeated BVP MBBS by 20 points to 8.

  • Match 2:

The next match witnessed CACP take on the team from Tolani in the male category. CACP emerged as winners overpowering Tolani by 39 points to 26.

  • Match 3:

The next match saw AFMC go head to head with RMD in a nailbiting battle. But at the end it was AFMC which had the last say, defeating RMD by 29 points to 27.

  • Match 4:

Another match to go down to the wire was the match between AIT and SITS. The winners were AIT defeating SITS by 46 points to 43.

  • Match 5:

The last match of the day saw the hosts, BVPCOE take on COEP. A very tight affair till half-time, eventually saw BVPCOE get the better of COEP defeating them by 52 points to 35.

Day 5

The 5th day of the tournament was set to play host to 2 college level matches in the female category.

Match 1:

The 1st match saw the girls from BVP IMED take on the team from BMCC. A clear domination by BMCC saw them home beating IMED by 40 points to 16.

Match 2:

In the next match, it was the hosts BVPCOE go head to head with COEP. A thrilling match which saw the team from COEP prevailing over BVPCOE by 20 points to 13.

Day 6

After 5 successful days of event, where teams from both corporates and the colleges were playing to qualify the pool round, the 6th day was encountered by heavy rains. The 6th day of the event was packed with few scheduled matches between the college teams but due to unavoidable circumstances, the fireball committee had to cancel all the matches considering the wet court and the inconvenience that would have been caused to the teams.
In spite of a heavy downpour, a large crowd was witnessed at the courts at 6:30 in the evening, and the club then organized the miscellaneous games, which was designed for fillers during the regular matches and for such situations.

The miscellaneous games include Free Throws, Three Point Shootout & Couple Dribble.

Free Throws: This is a single player game, in which people line up to throw the ball inside the basket. The ones to achieve the basket get hampers and goodies.

Three Point Shootout: This also is a single player game, in which people get 10 tries to throw the ball in the net from the outer circle in an attempt to score three pointers. The ones to achieve the basket get hampers and goodies.

Couple Dribble: This is a cupid game i.e. a couple game in which two couples are up against each other in an order to dribble their way across the court to score points against their opponent couple. The ones to win the game get hampers and goodies.

A large number of entries were registered for these games, and the winners were awarded with the hampers and goodies.

The committee then rescheduled the fixtures accordingly to adjust the remaining matches in last 4 days of the event.

Day 7

The quarter finals for the college category were on and it was time for some knockout matches.

Match 1:
The first quarter-final saw KCSC take on AFMC in a thriller of a match. A match where any team team would have emerged as winners, it was KCSC having the final say defeating AFMC by 37 points to 29.

Match 2:
The second quarter-final saw BVP Architecture take on Army Institute of Technology in a close encounter. A match with a breathtaking finish saw BVP Architecture outsmarting AIT by 32 points to 29.

Match 3:
In another quarter-final, it was the defending champions, BVP IMED take on CACPE. A high-scoring match saw BVP IMED defeating CACPE by 66 points to 54.

Day 8

In the last cluster of the league matches lined up for the corporate category, the day witnessed 2 matches.

Match 1:
In a low-scoring match between HSBC and Dar-Al Handasah, it was HSBC defeating team from Dar-Al Handasah by 20 points to 6.

Match 2:
In another match, it was Dar-Al Handasah again, this time taking on Innovita. A competitive match, which eventually saw Innovita take the game defeating Dar-Al Handasah by 41 points to 31.

The quarter finals for the college category were on and it was time for some knockout matches.

Match 1:
The first quarter-final saw KCSC take on AFMC in a thriller of a match. A match where any team team would have emerged as winners, it was KCSC having the final say defeating AFMC by 37 points to 29.

Match 2:
The second quarter-final saw BVP Architecture take on Army Institute of Technology in a close encounter. A match with a breathtaking finish saw BVP Architecture outsmarting AIT by 32 points to 29.

Match 3:
In another quarter-final, it was the defending champions, BVP IMED take on CACPE. A high-scoring match saw BVP IMED defeating CACPE by 66 points to 54.

Day 9

In the last cluster of the league matches lined up for the corporate category, the day witnessed 2 matches.

Match 1:
In a low-scoring match between HSBC and Dar-Al Handasah, it was HSBC defeating team from Dar-Al Handasah by 20 points to 6.

Match 2:
In another match, it was Dar-Al Handasah again, this time taking on Innovita. A competitive match, which eventually saw Innovita take the game defeating Dar-Al Handasah by 41 points to 31.

Heading towards the penultimate day of the 17th edition of Fireball, saw the day scheduled with a couple of last league matches in the corporate category and the knockouts for the same.

Match 1:
The first match of the day saw TATA take on Wipro. A dominating performance by Tata saw them home defeating Wipro by 40 points to 27.

Match 2:
In another match, it was Infosys brutally thrashing the team from Dar-Al Handasah by 41 points to 15.

Quarter-Finals (Corporate Men)

  1. The first QF saw Accenture take on Innovita. A close match with an unpredictable finish till the very end, saw Accenture defeating Innovita by 44 points to 35.
  2. The second of the lot saw the team from Initiative take on TATA. A high-scoring thriller, saw the team from Initiative get the better of TATA defeating them by 54 points to 49.
  3. The next match saw the clash between Infosys and BNY Mellon. A one-sided affair saw the team from Infosys defeating the team from BNY Mellon by 52 points to 30.
  4. The last QF of the category saw Wipro overpowering FeelSofts by 32 points to 25.

Semi-Finals (Corporate Women)

  1. The first of the semi-finals saw the match between Infosys and TCS Maitree. An easy fixture for Infosys eventually, saw them defeating TCS by 18 points to 6.
  2. The next SF saw Innovita take on Cognizant. A mammoth win for the team from Innovita, which saw them defeating Cognizant by 28 points to 6.

Semi-Finals (College Men)

  1. The 1st semi-final saw the clash between BVP IMED and KCSC. An exhibition of a rainfall of baskets by both the teams, saw BVP IMED defeating KCSC by 74 points to 63.
  2. In the next SF, it was BVPCOE taking on BVP Architecture. A thrilling encounter witnessing a result favouring the hosts, who defeated the team from Architecture by 35 points to 31.

Semi-Finals (Corporate Men)

  1. The first semi-final saw Infosys take on Wipro. A crisp battle between the two eventually saw Infosys triumph over Wipro by 49 points to 35.

The next semifinal saw Accenture excel over Initiative in a nail-biting finish, defeating them by 35 points to 31.
